FOR
GRADES 5-8
August 23, 1999
Drafting/Selecting of players will be conducted as follows after practice is completed away from the field:
1. Former 5th and 7th grade players who played on a team the previous season remain on the same team if:
a. they completed the previous season
b. registered prior to the draft
2. The following procedure will be used for conducting the draft/selection of players:
a. Each coach will pick a number out of a hat (1,2,3,4,5,6, etc.)
b. Beginning with the number 1, each coach will hand pick a total of 2 players
c. The order for picking will be as follows:
1,2,3,4,5,6,6,5,4,3,2,1
d. At the Completion of this round each coach will have selected 2 players for their team.
3. The remaining players will be listed, categorized (large or small; backs or linemen) by grade and selected via blind draw as follows:
a. Each player will be categorized by the above and their grade at the field prior to the draft. This categorization is to be mutually agreed upon by a panel of at least 3 coaches during practice.
b. At a minimum, each player’s name, address, phone, category, and grade will be listed.
c. Returning players and those selected via hand pick method in paragraph 2 above will be separated from this list and given to the respective team coach.
d. Each player’s name address, phone, category, and grade will be cut from the list in separate slips of paper and sorted both by single category (back or lineman) and grade.
e. Starting with the oldest new players by grade, either 6th or 8th and single category, coaches will begin to pick players blindly out of a hat to equalize the total number of players on each team. This can be done a variety of ways with all coaches in agreement of the method used.
The coach with the least number of returning players will be the first pick with the remaining order to be determined by the number of returning players in each team. In cases of equal numbers of returning players, a coin toss will determine order.
f. Once each team is at an equal number of players, coaches will draw numbers for rotational blind picks on the remaining players. Picking order will be as follows:
1,2,3,4,5,6,1,2,3,4,…….
g. Once a grade or category has been completely picked, another category and grade will
be mutually agreed upon for continuing with the draft selections.
4. Each Coach will notify players either by phone the same night as the draft, prior to the next practice, or not later than the next scheduled practice following the draft.
5. The highest ranking board member present will facilitate the draft process and make any other determinations necessary that are not outlined above.
THIS JUNIOR PANTHER FOOTBALL DRAFT PROCEDURE IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE AN OPEN, HONEST, AND EQUAL METHOD FOR SELECTING PLAYERS.
